Holy Week in La Rioja, living tradition and roots

Holy Week is lived in Spain in a very special way, with emotion and flooding the streets which are filled with hooded pilgrims walking the streets of every town across the Spanish geography.

The festival lasts 8 days, the most important of which are Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Brotherhoods go out in procession carrying pasos (also known as tronos or andas) depicting religious motifs, adorned with flowers and accompanied by drums.

The silence that reigns in the streets during the procession leaves its mark on visitors who are experiencing this solemn festival for the first time. It’s undoubtedly a unique scenario that can only be experienced once a year, and an added attraction for lovers of our culture and traditions.

Semana Santa La Rioja

That’s why we encourage you to visit La Rioja during these days. In addition to the region’s attractions, you’ll enjoy a unique experience. From the boutique hotel Santa María Briones, located in the center of Briones, declared one of Spain’s most beautiful villages, you can experience the processions up close, as well as take a route through Logroño, Ezcaray or Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where they are experienced with particular intensity.

More precisely, in Briones, on Good Friday, from 9 pm to midnight, the procession of the Holy Burial and Solitude is celebrated, the central act of this feast.

At Easter, as well as making the most of typical Rioja dishes such as lamb chops with vine shoots, cod à la Rioja, eggs and potatoes à la Rioja, among many other recipes, torrijas (French toast) take on special importance. Torrijas are a typical Easter dessert that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, for example with wine or dipped in chocolate.
