ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES IN LA RIOJA TO HELP YOU DISCOVER THE LAND

With spring comes a wonderful time to have some adventures in La Rioja. Nature, good weather, and ever-longer days beckon you to get outside and spend more time there.

At the Hotel Santa María Briones, we’ve got a range of low-intensity or quick-to-do activities to pair with the real star here: savoring a magnificent wine and the good food that characterizes this place.

Golf day

A sunny spring day spent golfing could be the ideal outing; it’s a well-rounded physical activity where you’re surrounded by nature and greenery and able to bask in good company.

Located in the village of Cirueña, the Rioja Alta Golf Club features 71 hectares and 18 holes with a par of 72. The course is undeniably beautiful and perfect for players of all levels.

La Rioja from a new point of view

Oja Sport gives us options to take in and take on the landscape in a whole new way. Whether by kayak or quad, on a 4×4 trail, or appreciating La Rioja from way up above in a hot air balloon.

You can ride down the Ebro River, experience the thrill of flight while enjoying unique views, or take the trail at your own pace on a quad…

Visit La Rioja's Botanical Garden

Just 20 minutes from the Hotel Santa María Briones by car, you’ll find the Jardín Botánico de La Rioja in the town of Azofra. The perfect way to unplug and take a soothing stroll surrounded by trees, plants, and flowers from all around the world. The gardens also host exhibits, events, and sculptures.

One quirk of this botanical garden is that it allows visitors to walk through barefoot.

Matute's salto del agua hike

This circular trail departs from the outskirts of the town of Matute for a 4 km route with a duration of approximately 2 hours.

Along its path, you’ll find the Salto del Agua (a small waterfall), spot falcons or golden eagles among the reddish mountains, and replenish the oxygen in your lungs while also taking in the pleasant aroma of pines, oregano, and thyme. You may also spot some stags or deer.

Los Sotos de Alfaro by bike

Taking a bike ride through the Sotos de Alfaro nature reserve might be one of the very best ways to fully experience La Rioja’s wild side.

It’s a place to interact with untamed nature that’s been designated a protected natural site thanks to the richness it contains.

La Rioja Turismo suggests two bicycle routes perfect for this time of year.

Runs from Briones

This form of exercise has no shortage of fans.

Even on a relaxing, unplugged vacation, you can take a small part of your day to head out for a run, boost your endorphins, and get some fresh air.

You can find running paths and routes surrounded by nature without ever leaving Briones. Trails like the Antiguos Pobladores and Davalillo or the Camino Los Meandros are perfect for discovering a small sliver of this land while getting a quick run-in.

For guests of the Hotel Santa María Briones, a gym is available for your use if you’d like.

Gimnasio de Santa María Briones

Any of these activities would pair perfectly alongside a reservation for lunch or dinner at Santa María Briones. At Allegar or El Calado, you can savor the most authentic Riojan cuisine.
